We are always delighted to hear from potential volunteers, especially those who may be interested in sidewalking with the riders and the horses. No horse experience is necessary.
You must be over 16 years of age to volunteer. RDA runs Training Days throughout the year, however if you’ve just missed one it’s no problem, as you’ll be given ‘on the job’ training with an experienced volunteer.

Your job as a ‘Sidewalker’ is to walk beside the horse, guiding and motivating the rider to achieve the tasks and activities set by the Instructor. In the beginning you’ll probably be paired up with an experienced volunteer who’ll show you what to do. A third person is in charge of and ‘leads’ the horse.
On your first visit you may be asked to watch the session only, rather than actually participate. Either way, it’s a good idea to wear shorts/T-shirt and ‘closed-in’ shoes such as sneakers. There’s no need to worry about the weather as we now have a roof covering our outdoor arena, which enables sessions to continue in all conditions, protecting riders and volunteers from both rain and sun.
